چکیده

background and aim: some risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea (osa) such as upper respiratory airways abnormalities and obesity overlap with the risk factors for eustachian tube dysfunction (etd). in this study, we investigated the prevalence of etd in a population of patients with osa. methods: tubal dysfunction was determined by tympanometry and inflation-deflation test in 36 patients diagnosed with severe osa and 20 normal participants. results: more than 80% of patients with osa had concomitant etd at least in one ear. obese participants had a smaller tympanometric peak pressure (tpp) shift after inflation-deflation test than non-obese subjects. there was no signifycant correlation between tpp shift and duration of osa. conclusion: high prevalence of concomitant etd was determined in patients with severe osa and obese individuals. tubal function testis suggested in patients referred for osa evaluation.

Increased risk of Eustachian tube disorders in patients with sleep-disordered breathing

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and Eustachian tube disorders (ETDs) share the same risk factors. The specific aim of this study was to determine the correlation between these 2 conditions and to determine whether treatments for SDB reduce the risk of ETD.This is a retrospective and large population-based cohort study. According to Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, out of 1...

Update on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent knowledge on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube. RECENT FINDINGS A clinically useful test for eustachian tube function is still lacking. Narrowing of the isthmus alone was demonstrated to be an insufficient cause of otitis media. Inflammatory mediators identified within the eustachian tube and mi...

Sleep disordered breathing in hospitalized patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVE There is a relatively small body of literature looking at sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in acutely ill inpatients. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of SDB in acutely ill patients admitted to tertiary care centers referred for an inpatient polysomnogram and to identify associations between SDB and patient characteristics. METHODS The study was a retrospectiv...

SLEEP DISORDERED BREATHING Effect of increased lung volume on sleep disordered breathing in patients with sleep apnoea

Background: Previous studies have shown that changes in lung volume influence upper airway size and resistance, particularly in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) requirements decrease when the lung volume is increased. We sought to determine the effect of a constant lung volume increase on sleep disordered breathing during non-REM ...

The Deflation (Passive) Opening Pressure of the Eustachian Tube

OBJECTIVE: To compare the air deflation pressure of the eustachian tubes in patients with tympanic membrane perforations due to various forms of otitis media and those with myringotomy or blast injury perforations. METHODS: The study group consisted of 321 patients (407 ears) aged 4 months to 91 years with tympanic membrane perforations due to otitis media (318 ears), blast injury (27), and myr...

Sleep-disordered breathing in unilateral diaphragm paralysis or severe weakness.

Few data exist concerning sleep in patients with hemidiaphragm paralysis or weakness. Traditionally, such patients are considered to sustain normal ventilation in sleep. In the present study, diaphragm strength was measured in order to identify patients with unilateral paralysis or severe weakness. Patients underwent polysomnography with additional recordings of the transoesophageal electromyog...
